Part 2 of Hope: Education (STEM)
This week Education will be the highlighted segment of H.O.P.E. Not only is education a way to challenge yourself to learn something new and keep your mind sharp, but it is perhaps the most tangible and understandable aspect of hope. It is the one proven gateway of hope for those wanting to pursue a better life. Education has become such a common part of everyday life in America that we often seem to take it for granted. This is something Justin never did; he valued his higher education and made the most of it by joining a myriad of clubs and challenging himself academically. More specifically Justin valued STEM education. Why STEM education? As Dr. Stacy Klein-Gardner, professor at Vanderbilt University said, “ STEM education teaches you a way of thinking and problem solving that is broadly applicable. Few things now are not impacted by STEM disciplines so everyone should have an understanding of them. If a person has an understanding of the world around them and confidence about how to proceed in it, then they have hope for the future.” Justin had this hope for his future. After graduating from the esteemed Vanderbilt University, he then headed straight to the workforce being employed by Allison Transmission.
1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “ So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” It is important to stay grounded in the fact that no matter what we are doing it is for His glory and for an eternal purpose. Education falls under this category of things we do that have a greater meaning. Everything in this world is a part of God’s creation, so by studying STEM education one can experience His glory by further understanding the world around them. In addition, we can better give love and hope to those around us who are lost.
Currently all proceeds of Justin’s Run For Hope go to funding scholarships for future STEM majors graduating from Zionsville Community High School or attending the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering. Now, Justin’s legacy continues by supporting new STEM majors and their pursuit of academic endeavors. Kevin Xiang, one of the first recipients of the Justin’s Run For Hope scholarship, explained the impact this scholarship made in his life. “Knowing that there are people in this world that are willing to give so much to someone they don't know is very heartwarming. This scholarship has helped my family and me tremendously, and it gives me hope that I'll be able to help others in the future.” This is exactly the purpose of Justin’s Run. This run brings hope to the lives of everyone involved, and by simply joining the run you could bring hope into someone’s academic future.
